Santa Fe &
Disneyland Railroad
1974 - 1976 - 2001

"Move all those trees back fifty feet. I want the people on the big trains to see what's going on in here.
Those trees keep it hidden from them."
- Walt Disney

Fabulous collectables like this are available at phil-sears.com.
Early Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad tickets were segmented to allow you to board once at each station to tour the entire park. Clever Guests would use each segment to ride the complete trip around the Park. Note that there are Railroad Stations on Main Street, in Frontierland and in Fantasyland, but not in Tomorrowland. All Aboard! The Disneyland Railroad at the Main St., Frontierland or Tomorrowland depots.

These original passenger cars were later discontinued, due to the poor sightlines and visibility. Replacement cars seated guests facing to the right side of the train. (That's where everything IS, after all!)

Departure from Main Street

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome aboard the Santa Fe and Disneyland Railroad. We're now embarking on a grand circle trip around Disneyland. Throughout our journey, we ask that you keep your hands and arms inside the train, remain seated at all times, and no smoking, please.
You're now riding aboard one of five authentic, steam-powered trains on the Santa Fe and Disneyland Line. The forerunners of these trains were the celebrated "Pioneers of the Rail", that spanned our growing nation around the turn of the century.
We're now passing through the outskirts of Adventureland, one of the six thematic lands that make up The Magic Kingdom. We'll see a part of each land along the way and we'll be making several stops before reaching the exciting climax of our trip, a journey through the Grand Canyon, into the fantastic Primeval World, realm of the dinosaurs!

No jungle foliage, no New Orleans warehouse district, nothing to prevent a long clear view all the way to the electrical towers in the parking lot.

Across the tracks from the Frontierland Station is the Stationmaster's office where you can hear the telegraph clicking away in Morse Code, sending text taken from Walt's Opening Day dedication speech:

"To all who come to Disneyland, Welcome.
Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future."

This structure was once the original Frontierland Station and was found inside the tracks where it was used as the passenger station in the park's early days.

Bear Country and Settler's Cabin

Emerging from the tunnel, we are now in Bear Country on the edge of the wilderness. Bear Country has Trading Posts, places to eat, and the wildest show in the wilderness, The Country Bear Jamboree.

Now, we're heading into the true backwoods. Watch for Indians and wild animals near the water's edge.
This is the American West as it was a century ago. Our forefathers who tamed this great wilderness faced constant danger. And there across the river is proof - a settler's cabin afire! The old pioneer lies nearby, the victim of an Indian arrow!

Walt Disney often said, "Disneyland will never be completed as long as there is imagination left in the world", and here in Frontierland, there are still wide open spaces for imagination to conquer.

Behind The Festival of Fools Arena

[Live Conductor:] Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Welcome aboard the Disneyland Railroad.
Very shortly, we're going to be pulling into our next stop, Mickey's Toontown. Until that time, we ask you to stay seated at all times, and remain seated until we come to a full and complete stop at Mickey's Toontown.
Mickey's Toontown is your gateway to Fantasyland, it's a small world holiday, and Matterhorn Bobsleds. Unfortunately, at the moment, Toontown is closed because we have our holiday fireworks coming up at 7:20. You want to be sure to check those out...and remember, it rains... >ack< ...it snows (!) every evening here at Disneyland during the holidays. You can check those out at small world Mall, Main Street, and in Frontierland.
Once again, our next stop is Mickey's Toontown. Thanks for joining us on the Railroad. We hope you have a magical evening here at Disneyland.

Through Fantasyland

As we emerge from the tunnel, you can see the highest point in Disneyland, the Matterhorn, towering high above the Happiest Kingdom of them all, Fantasyland. This is the realm of Snow White, Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, and many other famous characters from Walt Disney film classics.

In just a few moments, we'll be riding past the enchanting home of it's a small world, Walt Disney's salute to children everywhere. The boats you will see carry guests along the seven seaways on the happiest cruise that ever sailed; a visit to a fantasy kingdom, where the children of the world sing and dance for your enjoyment. From our train, you can see the boats sailing past the topiary garden, where trees and shrubs grow in the shapes of animals.

Tomorrowland Transportation

Disneyland has pioneered many innovations in entertainment, even in transportation. The concrete Highway In The Sky you see here, carries the trains of tomorrow's mass transit system, the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail. Our silent, electric-powered monorail trains travel high above the Magic Kingdom on a scenic journey that begins in Tomorrowland, and takes you to and from the Disneyland Hotel.

Just ahead, running parallel to our train, is the Autopia Freeway, and winding above Autopia, you may see the PeopleMover, another new form of transportation introduced for the first time right here in Tomorrowland.

Tomorrowland on the Move

We're crossing into Tomorrowland, a land where everything is on the move. If you look overhead, you might catch a glimpse of a Mark V Monorail. When Disneyland introduced the Monorail back in 1959, it was the first daily operating Monorail system in the Western Hemisphere. Today's Monorail trains glide along a two-and-a-half-mile route, traveling to the Disneyland Hotel and back.

Winding below is the Autopia, where drivers of all ages can take to the road...and no license is required.
And if you've ever dreamed about seeing what lies beyond the stars, Space Mountain and Star Tours offer thrilling trips into the furthest reaches of the galaxy.
Yes, it all seems pretty amazing, but if there's one thing we've learned, it's that here in Tomorrowland, everything is possible.

The Tomorrowland Station is sleek, angular, and somewhat anachronistic. The arrivals speeches don't seem to be as loud or as important as they are in Frontierland. Perhaps it's the louder ambient background noise of Autopia cars, Orbitrons and rock bands.

Between the Dioramas

That's the spectacular Grand Canyon as we know it today, but it wasn't always that way. In fact, millions of years ago, warm primeval seas covered the region we call the Grand Canyon. Strange creatures crawled from the seas and one day giant animals thundered over the land and roamed the swamps and marshes. Our ancestors never heard the sounds we're about to hear, nor saw the sights of this fantastic Primeval World! (657kb.wav:30sec)

Background illustrations for our 1958-Welcome, 1958-Main Street, U.S.A., and 1958-Fantasyland, and Disneyland Railroad pages were scanned from a trio of 3"x5", single-fold notecards. The back side reads, "© Disneyland, Inc." Sorcerer Mickey welcomes any information that guests may care to offer as to the history, value, and missing members of this notecard set. These illustrations seem to represent conceptual artwork predating the opening of Disneyland. By the park's opening in 1955, the name of Sleeping Beauty's Castle had been well-established, with the Matterhorn opening in 1959. The designations, "Fairy Castle" and "Snow Mountain" place the illustrations well before then. It would seem that these were prototype designations for Sleeping Beauty Castle, and, either what was known as "Lookout Mountain" (doubtful), or what we now know as The Matterhorn (more likely).
