1958 Audio Tour of
Main Street U.S.A. seems to be like the Tomorrowland of 1900, what with the mechanized blaring orchestrion and the "modern, high-speed horsecars!" How many different versions of "Meet Me Down On Main Street" can you count?

Walt Disney
Hello.  Welcome to Disneyland.

We have dedicated this happy place to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts that have created America.  This dedication is engraved on a plaque at the foot of the flagpole in the Disneyland Town Square.

Suddenly, as we come into this Square, the cares and worries of today are left behind and we find ourselves in a little town in the year 1900.  On one hand is the City Hall and on the other is the Fire Station.  Down Main Street we see the Emporium, and all the many shops. There is the Old Music Store, the Penny Arcade with its blaring Orchestrion, the Popcorn Man, and the Old Calliope.

At the end of the street, the Marching Band appears in full regalia. But let's take the horse-drawn streetcar and ride down Main Street.

Jiminy Cricket:  Hey, Walt, wait for us!  Well, we just made it.  These modern high speed horse cars wait for no one! But they're grand to see all the sights of Main Street.

And there's loads of traffic:  The surrey with the fringe, and there's the Fire Wagon, and listen to that old player piano in the window of the music store.

Over there is the Penny Arcade with the Shooting Gallery in back, and an orca...orces...well, one of those big old music-making machines in front.

There's always plenty of excitement on Main Street, especially when  the Disneyland Band is giving a parade.  Uh-oh, here they come now!

Well, here we are at the Plaza.  Now we'll have to get out and walk, because this is the end of the line.

Back to 1958 - WELCOME

Background illustrations for our 1958-Welcome, 1958-Main Street, U.S.A., and 1958-Fantasyland, and Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad pages were scanned from a trio of 3"x5", single-fold notecards. The back side reads, "© Disneyland, Inc." Sorcerer Mickey welcomes any information that guests may care to offer as to the history, value, and missing members of this notecard set. These illustrations seem to represent conceptual artwork predating the opening of Disneyland.
